My Story

I was raised on a farm, given lots of fresh meat and vegetables growing up. I was always very active, playing softball, basketball, tag football, kick ball, tennis, and finally getting involved in long distance running starting in middle school. From high school on, I took a turn. I had a mind of my own. I ate very little for breakfast (usually processed, high-gluten, high-sugar foods like cereal, toast with peanut butter and jelly), a 'protein bar' for lunch or some other 'nutritious' type bar that was nothing but processed, artificial, nutrient- poor, high fructose corn syrup-laden stuff. You know the type. Dinner with the family was the typical American fair--white potato, white rice, white bread (lots of gluten), meat, and a few veggies from a can. From university on, for roughly 15 years, my diet was less than sub-optimal. Breakfast was skipped, or it was a big bowl of sugared cereal, or even a bowl of fat free cake and fat free, sugar-free ice cream. 'Healthy', right? Iceberg lettuce was pretty much my only 'vegetable'. I lived off of mostly microwave, instant meals, junk food, boxed food, and canned goods--all highly processed, high-sodium, high-sugar, and laced with chemicals that not even a chemistry major could identify. But, it didn't matter what I ate, or so I thought, because I was exercising 6 days a week for 2 to 3 hours a day, hiking or running on the weekends. I was 'FIT', right? WRONG!

At age 32, my mom convinced me to have a DEXA scan (a bone density scan) just for 'preventative reasons', being she herself had been diagnosed with minor osteoporosis a few years earlier. So, I concurred, and you can imagine everyone's shock, including my doctor's, when the results showed I not only had osteoporosis, but SEVERE osteoporosis. Just to put it into perspective, a T-score of -1.00 ~ -2.49 yields a diagnosis of osteopenia. A T-score of under -2.5 means you have osteoporosis. The T-score for my lower spine was -3.66 and that of my hip was -3.78. THAT, my friends, is what happens when your body is not given the nutrition that it needs in order to function, let alone to handle the demands we place upon it when we exercise for hours and hours on end. Our bodies cannot run on pure oxygen! Our bodies are incredible, highly sophisticated, complex biochemical mechanisms! They require each and every day 90 (that's ninety) ESSENTIAL vitamins and minerals for proper functioning, and when any one of these are deficient, depending on what you're deficient in, cells malfunction, and eventually, we get a 'disease.' Disease doesn't just 'happen.' We build disease. We create disease with every bite we take, with every chemical we put on our skin, in our hair, and breathe in. Your doctor will tell you it's 'genetic', or that they just don't know what has caused it. Well, 99% of all diseases are NOT genetic, but it is true that your doctor most likely does NOT know the root cause of your condition. Why? Because 99% of all illness, sickness, and disease is caused by what we put into our bodies, or more importantly, what we NEGLECT to put into our bodies, namely the 90 essential vitamins and minerals. And doctors, unfortunately, are not schooled in nutrition, which is the base of wellness and recovery from disease, but are only schooled in how to perform sergury (cut out, replace, or altar vital organs) and prescribe pharmaceuticals. A sick body is not deficient in a pharmaceutical drug! It is deficient in calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D, the B vitamins, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A, Zinc, Selenium, the essential amino acids (the building blocks of all proteins in the human body), essential fatty acids, or any other of the 90 essential nutrients that our body requires.

Not only is it essential to get all 90 of these nutrients each and every day, but they need to be in a form that the human body can use assimilate. The majority of 'supplements' you find on your typical box-store shelf are 1) made by the same pharmaceutical companies who benefit from keeping you ill, and 2) are synthetic and are not recognized as nutrients by the body. They therefore end up being detoxified by the liver and excreted by the kidneys, putting even more strain on an already over-stressed system, or they are stored away in our fat cells and in our joints as toxin build-up. Either way, they are not helping you, and in fact are most likely doing you more harm, as I, and my dear mother, learned the hard way.
